A NOTE FROM NATALIE (ORGANIZER, PIEROGI FOR PEACE)
Food has tremendous meaning and symbolism in a Ukrainian household. While growing up in a Ukrainian family, some of my fondest memories are of traditional dishes brought to the table. One of those dishes is pierogi. My grandparents who we called Baba (grandmother) and Dido (grandfather) had a kitchen in their basement where they would cook all their meals together. As a child I loved to sit at their little kitchen table and watch my grandmother knead a large mound of dough to make pierogi. My Dido would man the stove caramelizing the onions with butter. I could hear the murmur of a large pot of water boiling with potatoes. The smells and sounds felt like a big hug. After rolling out the dough my Baba would use the rim of a drinking glass to stamp out perfect sized circles of dough. My Baba would always let me help fill and fold the pierogi. This is where I developed a passion for cooking and also a love for Ukrainian traditions.
Today, the very existence of Ukraine is being threatened as Russia continues indiscriminate, brutal attacks throughout the country. The people of Ukraine are fighting relentlessly to preserve their freedoms and way of life. 100% of the proceeds from Pierogi For Peace will be going to help the people in Ukraine. It is time for the world to unite, support and bring peace to Ukraine.
